Peppermint Essential Oil 10mL
Mentha piperita is a sterile cross between watermint and spearmint. It sets almost no viable seed, so every peppermint plant in commercial production descends from cuttings and runners of earlier plants. Zea's is grown in Victoria and steam distilled from the whole herb.

Peppermint oil is steam distilled from the herb of Mentha piperita, a natural hybrid of watermint and spearmint. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family alongside lavender, rosemary and thyme. Unlike most of the Zea range it is not an Australian native, but Zea's is Australian grown, in Victoria on Yorta Yorta land.
From bush to bottle
Because Mentha piperita is a sterile hybrid, it is not sown from seed. New plantings are established from runners and cuttings, which means a commercial crop is effectively one plant repeated. That is also why peppermint spreads so aggressively once established: the runners do the work.
Peppermint is harvested as the whole herb rather than leaf alone, and timing matters: the oil profile shifts as the plant approaches flowering. Cut at the right point the result is bright and clean; left too long it coarsens.
Steam passes through the cut herb, lifts the volatile oil, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added and nothing is rectified out afterwards. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.
The cooling sensation peppermint produces is not a temperature change. It comes from menthol binding to a receptor in your skin and mouth called TRPM8, the same receptor that responds to genuine cold. The nerve reports cold to the brain, and the brain believes it, even though nothing has actually cooled down.
That is why the effect is so much stronger than any other mint, and why it persists on skin after the oil has evaporated. It is also a reminder to dilute properly. Neat peppermint on skin overwhelms that receptor and can be genuinely uncomfortable, particularly for children, which is why it should always go into a carrier oil first.
Quality and testing
Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The full constituent breakdown is held on the batch certificate rather than published here, because the ranges shift with each season and harvest.
Most of the world's peppermint oil comes from the United States and India. Zea's is grown in Victoria on Yorta Yorta land, which is unusual for this crop and the reason it can be sold as a single origin oil rather than a blended commodity.

A botanical and aroma comparison to help you choose between oils. It is not a claim that one oil performs better than another.
Ways to use it
3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.
Peppermint blends particularly well with Kunzea, Eucalyptus and the citrus oils.
One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.
One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.
A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.
Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.
A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.
One drop on the fingertips, cupped and inhaled, when focus drops.
Peppermint is menthol-rich, which makes it stronger on skin than it smells. Dilute well and keep it away from small children.

Menthol activates TRPM8, the receptor your nerves use to detect cold. Nothing actually cools down; the nerve simply reports cold and the brain accepts it. That is also why the sensation outlasts the smell.
